Sindhu, Gopichand Bag Coach, Coach of the Year

Mumbai: Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu was awarded the sportsman of the year by Sports Illustrated magazine in Mumbai on Thursday.

The silver medalist at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, PV Sindhu, took her momentum forward, winning the Syed Modi International and India Open titles earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Pullela Gopichand was awarded the Coach of the Year award for advising a number of carriers such as Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth, B Sai Praneeth, HS Prannoy and many others to do well on the international circuit during the past Years.

Srikanth, Sai Praneeth and Prannoy players have shown an exceptional way in recent months, with the former Indonesia Open Super Series winner and the Australian Open Super Series. He also reached the final of the Singapore Super Series final, where he lost to Sai Praneeth at the end.

Meanwhile, HS Prannoy, despite not winning a major title, has demonstrated an exceptional way, defeating players like Olympic silver and gold medalists Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long, respectively, in consecutive matches.

Former sprinter Milkha Singh pocketed the Living Legend award while the Lifetime Achievement award was won by shooter Abhinav Bindra.

KL Rahul received the Gamechanger award of the year, while the junior Indian hockey team received the Team of the Year award.
