MUMBAI: Salman Khan is recording his statement in a Mumbai court today in a hit-and-run for 13 years. The 49-year-old actor is accused of running over people in the streets with his truck on the morning of September 28, 2002. One person was killed and four wounded.

Bollywood star Salman Khan to appear before a court in Mumbai on Friday in connection with 2002 cases hit-and-run in which the actor is accused of killing one person and injuring four by ramming his car into a shop.

It would be crucial for the 49-year-old test, the actor as he has the opportunity to give his version of the accident that occurred on the morning of September 28, 2002, when his car ran over people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra here.
Judge DW Deshpande has called Khan to appear on Friday to give his declaration under Article 313 of the Code of Criminal Procedure next to fag end of the trial after the prosecution closed its evidence by examining more than 25 witnesses in the tribunal.
Under this provision of the Code of Criminal Procedure, not only the defendant has the opportunity to put across their claim on the evidence presented by the prosecution, but the court may ask questions to clarify any ambiguities that may have arisen during the trial, said special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat.

After recording his statement, Khan also have the opportunity to cross-examine witnesses for the defense if he wants to.

The court then hear arguments from both sides before giving their verdict, Gharat said.

It is a new trial being held in a court session after a magistrate said the offense of culpable homicide not amounting to murder that provides penalties up to ten years.

The prosecution has alleged that the actor was under the influence of alcohol, including interviews of witnesses to prove that before the accident had gone with friends to a bar in a seven-star hotel in the last hours in the evil day.
