GST Effect: Maruti Suzuki lowers Baleno prices

maruthiAs the Maruti Suzuki Baleno has a total length of less than 4 meters and both of its engine – petrol and diesel – fall in 1.2 liters and 1.5 liters, respectively, the Baleno falls into the small car category. Cars under this category attract a 29 percent Good and Service Tax (GST) for gas variants and 31 percent for diesel variants. Because of this, Baleno prices have declined nationwide. However, in Delhi, prices have increased slightly.

While the Baleno was previously available at an initial price of Rs 5.28 lakh in Delhi, the same variant of Sigma gasoline is now available at Rs 5.26 lakh (both prices ex-Delhi showroom). The price drop for the upper variant with the diesel engine is Rs 1,000, and now costs Rs 8.42 lakh (ex-Delhi showroom).
Baleno prices have dropped significantly in Mumbai, where cars were taxed at a higher rate earlier. The drop in the price of the basic variant of Sigma gasoline, which now costs Rs 5.29 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai), is Rs 29,000. The high-end diesel variant of the Baleno is now cheaper for Rs 42,000.

The price of Baleno RS is seen a steeper decline in comparison, and the sporty version with the turbocharged 1.0-liter petrol engine now costs Rs 8.37 lakh ex-showroom in Delhi and Rs 8.4 lakh ex-showroom in Mumbai. That is a reduction of Rs 32,000 and Rs 78,000 for Delhi and Mumbai, respectively.

The Baleno competes with the Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz in the space of the premium saloon. The Hyundai and Honda also fall under the small car holder and come with gasoline and diesel engines. Both the Elite i20 and Honda Jazz also see a drop in prices in the range of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 in Delhi and Rs 33,000 to Rs 55,000 in Mumbai.
