Bangladesh Sentences 16 To Death For Burning 19-Year-Old Woman Alive

Bangladesh court sentenced to death in Kerosene burning case The verdict Thursday sentenced 16 convicts to death. Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a young woman, has been arrested by the police for allegedly harassing her principal. Principal supporters pressured her to withdraw the case, but the victim did not back down.

This resulted in some thugs attacking the young woman at the college on April 6 this year. Kerosene was burned alive by tying the rope to the body. The young woman, who was admitted to the hospital with nearly 80 percent burns, died five days later. The incident caused serious turmoil in Bangladesh. People have raised concerns across the country for harshly prosecuting those who burned the young woman alive. Concerns were withdrawn after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made it clear that there was no talk of leaving the convicts.

A police official said that the assailants tried to portray the incident as a suicide but that the victim was running down the stairs and the fire broke out and burned heavily. The Fast Track court heard the case in just 62 days. But lawyers for the convicts say they will seek a higher court.
